Separation Equipment Disposal System – Upstream of Knockout Drums

As described above, a variety of justifications may exist for separation equipment in a collection and disposal system. One example seen in refineries is scrubbing of acid relief streams from an HF alkylation unit with potassium hydroxide upstream of the usual knockout drum and flare arrangement. Refer to API Recommended Practice 521, the CCPS book Guidelines for Pressure Relief and Effluent Handling Systems, and the references in each for further information on the need for and design of separation equipment in relief and vent collection systems.
